EV Home Charging Cost in India: The Real Monthly Numbers

Most "EV charging cost" articles give you one number: multiply your car's efficiency by a flat electricity rate and call it a day. That's a reasonable starting point, but it quietly ignores the thing that actually determines your bill in India — slabs.

How the cost is actually calculated

The basic formula is simple enough:

Monthly charging cost = (Monthly km driven ÷ efficiency in km/kWh) × electricity rate per kWh

The two variables that matter are your car's real-world efficiency (not the brochure figure) and your city's residential tariff. Both vary more than people expect.

The slab problem nobody mentions

Indian residential electricity tariffs are progressive — you pay more per unit as your monthly consumption climbs into higher slabs. Delhi, for example, runs roughly ₹3/unit for the first 200 units, rising to ₹4.50, then ₹6.50, then ₹8/unit as consumption increases (BSES/TPDDL slabs, before duty and surcharges). An EV can easily add 150–250 kWh to your monthly usage — enough to push an average household from a lower slab into a meaningfully higher one.

That means the "true" marginal cost of your EV's electricity isn't your average per-unit rate — it's whatever slab your last unit of the month falls into. If charging your EV pushes your household from the ₹4.50 slab into the ₹6.50 slab, your real charging cost is higher than a flat-rate estimate would suggest. Check your own DISCOM bill's slab structure before trusting any generic calculation, including this one.

Real monthly numbers, by model and city

Here's what home charging actually costs per month for a typical daily commute of 40 km (about 1,200 km/month), using average residential tariffs before slab effects — the same models and cities used in our EV browser:

| Model | Efficiency | kWh/month | Delhi (₹7.5/unit) | Bangalore (₹8.2/unit) | Mumbai (₹10.5/unit) | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | Tata Tiago EV | 7.0 km/kWh | ~171 kWh | ₹1,286 | ₹1,405 | ₹1,800 | | MG Comet EV | 7.5 km/kWh | ~160 kWh | ₹1,200 | ₹1,312 | ₹1,680 | | Hyundai Kona Electric | 6.0 km/kWh | ~200 kWh | ₹1,500 | ₹1,640 | ₹2,100 | | Tata Nexon EV | 6.2 km/kWh | ~194 kWh | ₹1,451 | ₹1,587 | ₹2,032 | | BYD Atto 3 | 5.5 km/kWh | ~218 kWh | ₹1,636 | ₹1,789 | ₹2,291 | | Mahindra XUV400 | 5.8 km/kWh | ~207 kWh | ₹1,552 | ₹1,697 | ₹2,172 |

These are pre-slab, average-rate estimates — your actual bill will run higher once your usage crosses into a higher slab, and lower if you're on a solar or time-of-day plan. For the exact math on your specific model and city, use our ROI calculator or browse model × city breakdowns.

Home charging vs public fast charging

Public DC fast chargers in India typically cost ₹15–25 per kWh — 2 to 3 times the cost of home charging even at Mumbai's higher residential rates. Home charging is almost always cheaper; public charging is a convenience premium for road trips or when you can't charge at home, not a substitute for it.

What actually changes your number

Three things move this estimate more than anything else: how much you actually drive (double the km, double the cost), your car's real-world efficiency in city traffic versus the rated figure (AC use, traffic, and short trips all reduce it), and which slab your household lands in once EV charging is added to your existing usage.

If you haven't already, run your own numbers — including your financing, insurance, and resale assumptions — in the full ROI calculator, read about EV insurance costs if you haven't budgeted for that yet, and see our home charger installation cost breakdown for the one-time setup cost this monthly number doesn't include.

Figures above are estimates based on average 2026 residential tariffs and manufacturer-quoted efficiency figures. Actual costs depend on your specific DISCOM's tariff structure, driving conditions, and your car's real-world efficiency — check your own electricity bill for exact slab rates.
