EV Buying Checklist
Everything worth checking before you commit to an EV in India, organized by decision stage. Use it alongside the ROI calculator for the numbers side of the decision.
Before you shortlist a model
- Does the certified range comfortably cover your real daily driving, with margin for AC use and traffic?
- Is there a home charging point available (dedicated parking + electrical capacity), or will you rely on public charging?
- How many authorized service centers are near you for this brand — not just showrooms?
- What's the battery warranty period and capacity retention guarantee (years/km)?
Before you finalize the price
- Have you confirmed on-road price, not just ex-showroom — including RTO, registration, and insurance?
- Are you eligible for any central or state subsidy, and is it applied at purchase or claimed afterward?
- Have you compared the on-road price against a comparable petrol model, not just looked at the EV in isolation?
Before you finance it
- Have you compared loan interest rates across at least 2-3 lenders, including EV-specific loan schemes?
- Does your down payment and EMI plan work for your budget, factoring in the higher on-road price EVs often have?
- Have you run the numbers through an ROI calculator using your real driving pattern, not a generic estimate?
Before you insure it
- Have you gotten quotes from at least 2 insurers, since EV premiums vary more than petrol car premiums do?
- Do you understand what your standard comprehensive policy excludes (e.g. water ingress, electrical surge to the battery)?
- Have you decided whether add-ons like zero depreciation or battery protection are worth it for your model?
Before you sign
- Have you test-driven the car in conditions similar to your daily use (traffic, highway, if relevant)?
- Do you know the expected resale value range at the end of your typical ownership period?
- Have you read the fine print on subsidy conditions — some require minimum ownership periods to avoid clawback?
