EV maintenance costs get discussed in absolutes — "EVs need zero maintenance" on one side, "battery replacement will bankrupt you" on the other. Neither is accurate. Here's what's actually true.
Reality: EVs need meaningfully less maintenance than petrol cars — no oil changes, no exhaust system, fewer moving parts in the drivetrain — but they're not maintenance-free. Tires, brakes, suspension, cabin filters, and coolant systems still need regular attention, just like any car.
Reality: Most EV batteries are warrantied for 8 years or a high mileage threshold, and are engineered to retain a meaningful percentage of capacity well beyond that. Battery replacement isn't a routine cost most owners will face within a typical ownership period — but it's still worth factoring in as a long-tail risk if you're planning to own the car for 8+ years.
Reality: It's the opposite. Regenerative braking — where the motor itself slows the car and recovers energy — means the physical brake pads are used less often than in a petrol car. EV brake pads often last longer, not shorter.
Reality: EV insurance is frequently higher than an equivalent petrol car, not lower — insurers price in the higher cost of battery and motor replacement parts. This is a genuine cost EVs carry that often gets overlooked in "EVs are cheaper" arguments.
Reality: Efficiency (km per kWh) varies meaningfully between models, just like mileage varies between petrol cars. A less efficient EV can meaningfully change your break-even math — don't assume all EVs perform the same on running costs.
